Anyone curious about what happens after the green garbage bin is emptied, how waste becomes fuel and what can be learned by looking directly at the things people throw away is invited to join an engaging tour of Hiriya.
Following the ceasefire and the return to regular activity, Hiriya Recycling Park has reopened, bringing back its flagship “Tour de Trash.” The tour offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the waste produced each day across the Tel Aviv metropolitan area and allows visitors to see and experience what happens after garbage trucks collect it from the streets.
Led by the Center for Environmental Education, the tour passes through a distinctive building designed entirely with discarded materials. Its main highlight is a visit to the advanced waste-sorting facility, where participants see how household waste is separated, sorted and converted into useful products such as alternative fuel. Beyond introducing the facilities, the tour encourages reflection on consumption habits and on what people can learn about themselves by looking directly at their waste.
Hiriya chairman Reuven Ladiansky said the tour is also an excellent opportunity to learn more about the extensive activity at Hiriya Recycling Park, which handles around 25% of all municipal waste in Israel. He added that the experience encourages thought about reducing consumption, reusing products and recycling.
Entry is restricted to visitors aged 18 and older, and advance registration through the Dan Municipal Association for Sanitation website is mandatory. Tours take place on weekdays from 10:00 to 12:30 and on Fridays from 09:00 to 11:30.
