Some events remind us why city life can matter. The Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality will hold a “Purple Evening” in Bialik Square, combining music, community, consideration and tolerance with a wider conversation about how culture can speak to everyone.
To mark the International Day of Equality for People with Disabilities, the municipality is holding a festive event open to the public. At its center is the Tav HaMeshaveh ensemble, in which musicians with and without disabilities perform beloved Israeli songs alongside original work. Kobi Aflalo will join them for three songs: “Mikhtav Le’akhi,” “Ma Shehalev Bakhar” and “Ba Mehashtika.” The evening will open with Polyphonia, a youth ensemble of special-education students operating through the city’s Education Administration.
The event will also launch a new collaboration between Bialik Square and the Makom Shamur nonprofit, which has worked for years to promote accessibility in cultural spaces. Together, they will prepare accessibility guides for the five cultural institutions in the complex: Bialik House, the City Museum, Felicja – House of Sound Art, Liebling Haus and Rubin Museum. The documents are intended to help visitors prepare in advance and feel safer and more comfortable during their visit. The process includes a fresh assessment of the buildings and content, with attention to the sensory, emotional and communication needs of diverse audiences.
Why a Purple Evening? The square will be lit in purple, the color internationally associated with the struggle for equal rights for people with disabilities.
Adapted theater content is also expected to be added in the future, making accessibility a natural part of the cultural institutions’ ongoing programming.
Bialik Square, a historic site that has become an active and diverse cultural center, is marking its Year of Accessibility with a development that looks at urban culture not only through its works, but also through the people who come to experience them.
