To mark Holocaust Remembrance Day, Bialik Square will host an evening led by Yoav Ginai, featuring musician and lyricist Yaakov Gilad. Gilad will share his experience as a member of the second generation and the story of his complex relationship with his mother, Halina Birenbaum, an Auschwitz survivor, author and poet whose books document her childhood memories of the Holocaust.
Director Yasmin Kiny will also take part. She directed “Where Are You Going,” a film documenting Gilad and his mother’s shared journey to Poland. Excerpts from the film will be screened, and Kiny will discuss the process behind its creation.
The conversation will address the transmission of complex memory, living remembrance and ways of documenting and telling these stories to future generations through art, with reference to the current reality of emergency, trauma and uncertainty.
The evening will include a live musical performance by Zachi Fodor, vocals, piano and guitar, and Dana Amdo, vocals and bass guitar. They will perform major classics written by Gilad that have become part of Israel’s soundtrack of memory, including “Ashes and Dust,” “When You Grow Up,” “Forgotten Childhood” and “A Window to the Mediterranean.”
The event will take place on Monday, April 13, in Bialik Square, Tel Aviv-Yafo.
Doors open at 19:00, and the event begins at 19:30.
