Tel Aviv Cinematheque will hold a Shavuot night study event on May 21, devoted this year to the theme of revelation in cinema. The program includes five screenings and a lecture by Ofer Liebergall.
The evening will explore moments when cinema touches on discovery, a shift in consciousness, faith, identity or an encounter with something difficult to express in words. These are not necessarily plot twists or solutions to mysteries, but moments when an image on screen changes the viewing experience.
Screening Program
18:30 | Persona
Ingmar Bergman’s “Persona” will open the evening. Before the screening, Ofer Liebergall will deliver a lecture titled “Bergman and Tarkovsky – Art from Human Darkness and Revelation.”
The film is presented through the idea of revelation as the collapse of identity: face against face, character against mask, doubling and the fluidity of the self.
19:00 | Taste of Cherry
Abbas Kiarostami’s “Taste of Cherry” will screen at 19:00. The cinematheque program describes it as a film of quiet, minimalist revelation, following a man moving through a landscape in search of an end point.
According to the event description, the film’s ending is a reminder that life continues beyond the frame.
20:45 | Andrei Rublev
Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Andrei Rublev” will screen at 20:45. The film explores faith and the ability of art to flourish under dictatorial rule, within a harsh reality and through a search for redemption.
21:00 | Ordet
Carl Theodor Dreyer’s “Ordet” will screen at 21:00. The film deals with faith and the power of words to create reality.
The event description notes that the miracle at its conclusion is not simply a plot development, but a cinematic experience of grace.
21:00 | 2001: A Space Odyssey
Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” will also screen at 21:00. It enters the program through the idea of cosmic revelation: the monolith, the evolutionary leap and the journey through light and color.
