The show, described by San Francisco critics as “the best musical in the world” and staged there for 92 consecutive weeks, was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Choreography on Broadway and received prestigious awards in London and elsewhere. Its Broadway run was originally planned for only nine weeks but ultimately lasted 14 months, and it has since returned to Broadway four more times.
About the Show
The production features 14 internationally renowned dancers and a live orchestra of 11 virtuoso musicians, including the bandoneon, the instrument most closely associated with tango. Together, they create an evening of original and traditional music, passion and Argentine dance.
A Brief History
The show tells the story of tango’s birth in late-19th-century Argentina, when thousands of men emigrated from Europe to South America in search of a new life and found themselves alone in the bars and neighborhoods of Buenos Aires. Tango was initially considered immoral, but after Argentine intellectuals introduced it to Paris, it became a sensation, spread across Europe and the Americas, and eventually returned to Argentina as one of the country’s most recognizable cultural exports.
