After more than 150 performances around the world, Wajdi Mouawad’s acclaimed masterpiece “Tziporim Kulam” comes to the stage of the Baruch Ivcher Beit Lessin Theatre for only 50 performances. The new production is directed by Yair Sherman.
Winner of the French Theatre Critics Association’s prestigious Grand Prix and praised by critics around the world, the play presents a sweeping family saga exploring love, identity, belonging and secrets from the past.
At the center of the story is a romance between a Jewish student of German origin and a beautiful Arab student. What begins as an innocent and intimate relationship becomes a large and unsettling drama when the couple is caught in a terrorist attack in Israel.
The young man’s severe injury brings his father back into his life. A former Israeli living in Germany, the father married a German woman and strongly opposes his son’s relationship. While waiting for his son to recover, he must also face the bitter and complicated relationship between his own parents and a terrible secret from the past that led him to leave Israel and threatens to change the entire family’s fate.
“Tziporim Kulam” is a larger-than-life family drama, but also a twisting journey toward the characters’ true identities. In a world where identity can determine a person’s fate, the play raises painful questions about family, love, memory and the cost of secrets kept for years.
