Anyone who thinks their love life is complicated should meet Herman Broder.
In mid-May, Beit Lessin Theatre will present an intriguing new stage adaptation of Nobel Prize laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer’s “Enemies, A Love Story.” The year is 1949. New York is full of life, the world is trying to gather the pieces after World War II, and Herman is simply trying to begin again. The problem is that he is living a double life: he is married to the Polish peasant woman who saved him during the war, while also having a passionate affair with a beautiful young woman carrying deep emotional wounds. As if that were not enough, his first wife – whom he was certain had died in the Holocaust – suddenly returns.
Based on a work long regarded as a modern classic and adapted into an Oscar-nominated film, the play offers a sharp, compelling and sometimes painful look at guilt, survival and lies spinning out of control. Herman tries to hold on to the future without looking back, but the past refuses to release him.
The new adaptation was created by Noa Lazar and is directed by Shir Goldberg. The cast includes Tom Hagai, Limor Goldstein, Yael Vakstein, Rada Kantorovitz, Odelia Moreh-Matalon, Ofir Weil and Eran Sharel.
