Sometimes it is worth leaving the city to discover something genuinely special, and May offers an excellent reason to travel to Jerusalem. The Train Theater presents “Branches Walking in the Air,” a new exhibition by artist and poet Nadia Adina Rose that turns the connection between theater and art into an experience the whole family can enter.
The exhibition space is designed as a playground for observation and discovery. Visitors are invited to take flashlights, wander through the theater, illuminate the works from different angles, examine the shadows cast on the walls and even imagine and invent new languages.
Throughout the space hang intriguing objects Rose calls “hieroglyphs” – signs sewn by hand from deep blue velvet resembling the color of ink. They look like an ancient or futuristic secret script, but they do not form concrete words. Instead, they point toward what cannot be explained through language.
Rose’s interest in the gap between experience and words comes from her personal story: she was born in the Soviet Union and immigrated to Israel at age 22. Learning a new language as an adult left a deep mark on her work, and that experience can be felt in every stitch of the exhibition.
The exhibition’s poetic title comes from Rose’s poem “Because,” including the lines: “…because of the branches walking in the air / because of the green traces of the leaves / because of the balance of the trees above graves of roots…”
