For anyone who has wondered what happens behind the scenes at Israel’s best-known recycling site, this is an opportunity to find out: Hiriya’s Center for Environmental Education is opening its doors for free tours revealing the site’s architectural transformation and historical stories. Here are the details of one of the weekend’s greenest events.
Open House Tel Aviv-Yafo returns with one of the most intriguing stops on the map: Hiriya Recycling Park. This is the third year the park has participated in the city’s architecture event, inviting visitors aged 18 and older to tour the renovated historic building that houses the Center for Environmental Education.
The tour is far more than a trip through a landfill. Participants will hear how an old organic-waste treatment plant became an architectural and ecological landmark, learn about the environmental considerations behind its distinctive design and view the artworks displayed inside. It is an opportunity to understand how Tel Aviv dealt with growing piles of waste in the early 20th century and what the future of waste sorting and energy production in Israel may look like.
Reuven Ladiansky, chairman of Hiriya and deputy mayor of Tel Aviv, welcomed the park’s third appearance in the city’s leading architecture event: “I invite everyone to enjoy a different kind of look at our work and discover the history and vision behind the park.”
Tours Will Be Held On:
- Thursday (7.5): between 12:00 and 14:00.
- Friday (8.5): first tour at 08:30, second tour at 09:30.
