Tel Aviv Cinematheque will hold a special Book and Reading Month series from June 7 to 21, 2026, featuring films and television episodes based on books. The program includes preview screenings, adaptations of Gothic literature, a tribute to Meir Shalev and documentaries about Russian creators.
The new series brings literature, film and television together through several different programs. Some screenings will be presented as thematic double bills, while others will include meetings or panels with creators and actors.
What Is in the Program?
The preview double bill will feature “At the Wolf’s Table,” based on Rosella Postorino’s novel, and “The Thing with Feathers,” adapted from Max Porter’s book and starring Benedict Cumberbatch. The series will also screen contemporary adaptations of 19th-century women’s Gothic literature: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride!” and Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights,” starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.
The program also includes both parts of Hagai Levi’s series “Etty,” based on the diaries of Etty Hillesum, as well as documentaries about Leo Tolstoy, Dziga Vertov, Anton Chekhov and Isaac Levitan.
Tribute to Meir Shalev
One of the series’ main programs will be devoted to Meir Shalev. On Friday, June 19, 2026, at 13:30, the documentary “This Is How It Was” by Adi Arbel will be screened. In the film, Shalev tells his life story in his own voice through interview archives, family footage and research notebooks.
On Sunday, June 21, 2026, at 20:30, the cinematheque will screen “As a Few Days,” an Italian adaptation of Shalev’s book, followed by a panel with the Israeli cast. The film features Mili Avital, Uri Pepper, Menashe Noy and Moni Moshonov.
