A man around 20 years old from central Israel was arrested on Monday evening on suspicion of attempting to extort protection money from a kiosk owner on Derech Shlomo in south Tel Aviv. Police said he threatened the owner with a knife and demanded $30,000.
According to the police investigation, the suspect entered the business carrying a knife and demanded the money. After the owner refused, the suspect allegedly threatened to harm him and fled.
Following a report to the police 100 hotline, officers from Sharet Police Station in the Ayalon Subdistrict and personnel from the Border Police’s Barkan Wing searched the area and arrested the suspect.
He was taken for questioning at the police station. Police said they would ask a court to extend his detention.
