Tel Aviv Cinematheque is devoting October to three substantial programs: films about democracy and power ahead of the elections, a survey of recent Romanian cinema and a tribute to filmmaker Amos Kollek. Selected screenings will include talks with filmmakers and film scholars.

A new strand titled How to Read Cinema will add short introductions that give audiences practical ways to notice how editing, cinematography, acting and sound shape a film.

Democracies on Trial

The month-long Democracies on Trial program looks at elections, protest, surveillance, propaganda and freedom of expression through films from different countries and periods.

  • In the Line of Fire, introduced by Benjamin Tobias for How to Read Cinema.
  • The Ides of March, The Lives of Others and Selma.
  • Yellow Letters in a preview screening, Hunger and The Secret Agent.
  • Suffragette with Meital Abecassis, There’s Still Tomorrow with Anat Eisenberg and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington with Ziv Hermelin Shadar.
